Milestones of Vision:
Vision Correction For Your Stage in Life

  • Milestone #1Ocular Adulthood (18 to 45)
  • Milestone #2Solutions for Age-Related Near Vision Loss (40+)
  • Milestone #3Milestone #3: Solutions for Cataracts (60+)

Milestone #1: Ocular Adulthood (18 to 45)

The beginning of adulthood ushers in many milestones of social and emotional maturity, and you’ve also likely reached Ocular Adulthood. Simply put, your eyes have finished developing and your vision is stable. During this stage, you may be starting college, having fun finding your path in your 20’s, or striving for a good work/life balance in your 30’s. Whatever you’re up to, you don’t need glasses or contact lens hassles holding you back.

Now is the ideal time to address your vision issues. When you get braces on your teeth, as many of us did in our youth, the goal isn’t to wear braces every day for the next 50 years. Once our teeth are straight, the braces are removed, and we enjoy life with a better smile. Think of vision correction in the same way, but with faster results. The younger you are when you have vision correction surgery, the longer you have to enjoy the freedom of improved vision.

At Parkhurst NuVision, we offer a full range of vision correction procedures and we work with you to find the best fit for your vision and your lifestyle:

Milestone #2: Solutions for Age-Related Near Vision Loss (40+)

For many of us the beginning of midlife is one of the busiest times in our lives—and the time when you start to “feel your age” just a little. You may be handling bigger work responsibilities along with increased family responsibilities while also maintaining your fitness, hobbies, and other relationships. And then, right in the middle of it all you notice your vision changing.

Presbyopia is the name for the age-related near vision loss that usually starts in our 40’s and causes us to need reading glasses. Presbyopia is a natural part of aging that affects everyone eventually. It causes the lens inside the eye to progressively lose its natural flexibility, which changes your ability to focus close-up. People who may have never worn glasses or contacts discover they need reading glasses and people who wear glasses start needing bifocals. In addition to the hassle of readers, many people don’t like the way they look in them. Luckily, we have solutions:

Milestone #3: Solutions for Cataracts (60+)

The third milestone encompasses a time of life that is ideally one of freedom. You’ve launched your children into adulthood, you’ve worked hard and had career success. If you have retired or are planning retirement, you can look forward to traveling, time for hobbies, and spending quality time with friends and family.

Along with these major life changes, you can expect your vision to change as well. Cataracts occur most commonly in this stage of life. Cataracts cause a clouding of vision that can get in the way of your daily activities and can eventually cause vision loss.

The good news is that cataract surgery is one of the most common, safe, and effective surgeries performed today. At Parkhurst NuVision we offer custom cataract solutions that can not only restore your vision, but can give you the best vision of your life! Our advanced IOL options can reduce or even eliminate your need for glasses or contacts.

What is Keeping You From Seeing Clearly?

When we talk about vision problems, we are usually talking about refractive errors. A refractive error is a common vision problem—more than 150 million Americans have one!1 Basically, a refractive error is an imperfection in the shape of the eye. There are four different types of refractive errors:

  • Myopia: Commonly known as nearsightedness
  • Hyperopia: Commonly known as farsightedness
  • Astigmatism: Causes blurry vision at multiple distances
  • Presbyopia: Age-related near vision loss

Which Vision Correction Solution is Right For You?

The best way to figure out which vision correction procedure is right for you is to schedule a consultation appointment with one of our San Antonio LASIK surgeons. A consultation is a no-pressure, no-obligation opportunity for you to ask any questions and to learn more about your eyes and your options. In the meantime, our Vision Correction Candidacy Quiz is a quick way to help you learn more about which procedure might be right for you.

LASIK

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a quick and effective way to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Our San Antonio LASIK surgeons are highly experienced and have helped many people enjoy life with better vision.

SMILE LASIK

SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) is an advanced vision correction procedure that is similar to LASIK, but offers an even quicker recovery. SMILE is a great option for people with active lifestyles who are looking to get out of glasses with as little downtime as possible. Parkhurst NuVision is the first and only LASIK center in the San Antonio region to offer SMILE.

EVO ICL

EVO ICL is an implantable collamer lens that is unique from LASIK and SMILE, with very similar results. ICL can treat a range of vision imperfections, including severe nearsightedness and it may be an option for patients who cannot have laser vision correction due to thin corneas or or dry eye concerns. EVO ICL offers many benefits, including built-in UV protection.

PRK

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) treats the eyes from the surface down to remove the imperfections in your cornea causing nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. This LASIK alternative is an option for patients who are not candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas.

Cross-Linking

Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) is a procedure that is primarily offered to patients who have Keratoconus, which is an eye condition in which the cornea develops an abnormal shape. People with Keratoconus are typically not candidates for laser vision correction, but CXL is a minimally invasive procedure that can treat Keratoconus while also saving your vision.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

RLE (refractive lens exchange) can correct for a variety of vision issues by replacing the eye’s natural lens with an advanced intraocular lens (IOL) to improve vision at varying distances. RLE can directly address presbyopia, or nearsightedness caused by an aging eye over 40 and it also prevents cataracts from developing in the future.

Blended Vision LASIK

Blended vision can be used to treat presbyopia (age-related near vision loss) in order to reduce or eliminate your dependence on reading glasses.

Corneal Inlay

A corneal inlay is an innovative procedure to correct presbyopia, the loss of near vision that affects people after the age of 40. In a corneal inlay procedure, a small device is implanted to correct the presbyopic lens and improve near vision with the goal of getting you out of reading glasses.

Laser Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are a natural part of aging and can be frustrating, but they can also be an opportunity to improve your vision! Laser cataract surgery with custom fit implant lens can correct blurry vision due to cataracts while also correcting refractive errors to help you live life with clear vision and less dependence on glasses.
